'Outlaw' matches are generally conducted under their own, non-sanctioned rules, and are not affiliated with any governing body (i.e. USPSA, IDPA, etc.). They are just as fun and may blend several different elements, challenges, divisions, and equipment not otherwise found in sanctioned matches.
For example, the "Hard as Hell" multi-gun match blends shooting pistol, rifle, and shotgun along with various physical challenges. Equipment, firearms, and match safety rules may vary from those of USPSA or IDPA. On the other hand, a local gun club may host a match format that is similar (sometimes identical) to a sanctioned match, but is not affiliated with any governing body. Some may choose to host a "Fun match" to attract new shooters.
Outlaw matches are much more common that is generally known. They are mostly done at the local level, and are infrequent at times. Some regional 'Outlaw' matches can be found at Motherlode Gun Club (Jamestown, CA), and Oakdale USPSA hosts a monthly 'Fun shoot' that is not sanctioned.
